About this experience

Kawashima Sake Brewery has been making sake in Takashima, on the western side of Lake Biwa, since 1865. The brewery draws on the area's clean groundwater and rice-growing land, and its best-known sake is Matsu no Hana. A visit introduces the brewery, the role of local water and the basics of sake-making, with tasting and the chance to buy local sake. Brewing happens in winter, so visiting in the cold months gives the best chance of seeing work in progress. Visits are short and easy to fit into a Kansai itinerary.
